Week 1 Recap of Summer Flavors at Create-a-Cook's Haverford Location!

Welcome to Summer Flavors at Haverford College Campus!

The vibrant atmosphere of our Haverford College Campus was the perfect backdrop for the inaugural week of our Create-a-Cook Summer Cooking Camp. This week, our junior chefs delved into the delightful world of Summer Flavors, exploring seasonal ingredients and crafting dishes that embody the essence of summer.


A Week of Culinary Exploration and Fun

Monday: Grilled Summer Corn Nachos & Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes

We kicked off the week with a blend of savory and sweet. Our junior chefs prepared Grilled Summer Corn Nachos, mastering cutting techniques and the art of assembling nachos with a fresh twist. They topped off the day with Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes, combining the lightness of sponge cake with the sweetness of summer strawberries.

  • Baking cupcakes and crafting fresh strawberry compote for topping.

 


Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Tuesday: Bruschetta Grilled Chicken & Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Tuesday introduced our junior chefs to the art of creating a balanced meal with Bruschetta Grilled Chicken, served with balsamic and orzo. They explored the complexity of flavors in bruschetta, mastering the perfect sear for chicken. The day ended on a sweet note with Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, where they learned the nuances of achieving rich, caramelized flavors.

  • Exploring the complementary flavors of balsamic glaze and fresh bruschetta.

Summer Vegetable Baked Ziti

Wednesday: Summer Vegetable Baked Ziti & Chocolate Zucchini Bread

Mid-week featured the comforting and vibrant Summer Vegetable Baked Ziti. Our junior chefs learned to incorporate seasonal vegetables into a classic Italian dish, mastering baking and flavor layering. They also revisited Chocolate Zucchini Bread, emphasizing the versatility of vegetables in sweet treats.

  • Baking techniques for achieving the perfect balance of pasta and vegetables.

  • Creating a rich tomato sauce from scratch.

  • Blending zucchini into a moist, chocolatey bread.


Vanilla Cake with Fresh Buttercream Frosting

Thursday: Macaroni and Cheese with Tomato Concasse & Vanilla Cake with Fresh Buttercream Icing

Thursday’s focus was on comfort food with a gourmet twist. The junior chefs prepared Macaroni and Cheese with Tomato Concasse, learning to elevate a classic dish with fresh tomato and herbs. They also baked a Vanilla Cake with Fresh Buttercream Icing, refining their skills in cake decorating and icing.

  • Crafting a creamy, cheesy sauce for macaroni.

  • Creating tomato concasse and incorporating it into the dish.

  • Baking and decorating a classic vanilla cake with fresh buttercream.


Junior Chefs anxious to try chocolate ganache

Friday: Taco Pizza & Cheesecake for Two in Ramekins

We concluded the week with a fusion dish—Taco Pizza—that combined the fun of tacos with the heartiness of pizza. They also made Cheesecake for Two in Ramekins, learning about portion control and the techniques for a smooth, creamy cheesecake.

  • Integrating taco toppings and perfecting cutting techniques used throughout the week.

  • Understanding the balance of spices and flavors in fusion cuisine.

  • Perfecting the art of making individual cheesecakes in ramekins.
